McGrows Farms began in 1996 with a passion to grow fresh, locally produced, organic vegetables, fruits, pickled products, vegetable starts, and an assortment of annual bedding plants. In 1999 we built our first greenhouse and started to develop our field crops. We also built our first hardening off greenhouse to condition the seedlings to our local climate.
The interest in our products has been outstanding from the beginning and necessitated expansion of our fields and greenhouse capacity. In 2006 we built a second large greenhouse and another conditioning one to meet the growing demands of our customers.
In 2008 we joined the Eat Local Sudbury co-operative as a local organic producer and have been successful with our extended outreach to the local community. In 2009 we hired additional student help to add more muscle, employment, and learning opportunities for our youth. Our first student was hired when he was only 11 years old and continues to work with us at 16. We are now interning a graduate in sustainable agriculture from Sir Sanford Fleming College.
My involvement with the Sudbury Horticultural Society as a board member is very rewarding. I am also a member of the board for Eat Local Sudbury and recently joined the Sudbury Food Policy Council as a voting member representing urban agriculture. In 2014 we plan to continue our expansion of the farm, as demand for our product continues to grow. Come visit us. McGrows welcomes you!
